A Necessary Post

Earlier this year, I had recently come out and I felt alone.  I had held conservative beliefs since I became interested in politics, long before I realized I was gay.  I was looking for someone to relate to.  I came across GayPatriot.  This blog showed me a side of homosexuality that I had never been exposed to (the conservative side).  I was also immediately engaged by the writing style of B. Daniel Blatt, which I found to be more fair and civil than what I was used to on blogs (which was refreshing).  I owe it to Mr. Blatt, with whom I have been corresponding, to commend him for helping me with feeling more confident about myself and for listening to what I have to say.  I must also commend him for preaching moral values, such as monogamy, in the gay community.  I cannot, in good conscience, not mention the blog that inspired me to establish my own.  Nor can I not mention the difference that GayPatriot, and Mr. Blatt, have made in my life.  I am honoured that Mr. Blatt would offer his support.  That alone is a big deal for me.

It is not an easy thing to come to terms with being gay.  It might not be easy to understand what I am saying and exactly how GayPatriot and Mr. Blatt have helped me.  Before I came across this blog, I was afraid of what my life would be like.  The uncertainty and the loneliness were depressing.  The concept of homosexuality seemed strange to me.  It still does, in many ways, but I now see that my life does not have change drastically.  And my sexuality is no longer something that makes me depressed.

I do not expect to effectively get across everything I would like to, but I feel that it is necessary to express my gratitude in this way.  It is difficult to try to describe this situation accurately without getting too personal.  But, all I have to do to realize what impact GayPatriot and Mr. Blatt have had on my life is to think about where I might have been had I not chanced upon that website and had he not offered his ear and his wisdom, through both his posts and through the messages he has sent me.

NOTE:  I added to my original post the last two paragraphs, and I also changed the first paragraph.

  1. Welcome out! I went through a similar process, but much later in life. I came out in my 40s and had the same feelings as you're going through right now. It took time, but it worked out extremely well - I'm sure it will for you too.

I also had difficulty finding politically like-minded gay people and found the gay community in general very hostile to conservatives - I also found GayPatriot and struck up an email conversation with Bruce Carroll, which was extremely helpful to me at the time. I also was inspired to start my own blog - you can find it here: http://diogenesborealis.blogspot.com

I hope you'll find as I have that the Canadian conservative blogging community is very welcoming of gay bloggers. We may not agree on all the issues (in fact I disagree with you on the issue of gay marriage) but we have almost always had enjoyable, respectful debate. That's more than I can say about the way we're received by liberal pundits.

Good luck - looking forward to reading your blog.

  2. Welcome aboard the conservative blogging train! As a conservative heterosexual Christian living in the Grand Canyon state, I embrace your courage to stand up for what you believe, to put your heart and mind out in the blogosphere. GayPatriot is one of the most insightful, intelligent, and humorous conservative blogs out there - if you're going to be inspired by any conservative blogger, Mr. Blatt is an excellent choice.

I wish you tremendous success in your new endeavor - true patriotism knows no gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation. We're all on the same side - supporting inalienable freedoms, less government interference, and free market principles. You will have days you love blogging... days that you will truly loath it. You'll never be bored, however.

I'll be popping in often - as Eric wrote above, I'm looking forward to reading what you have to say. God bless and hang in there.

  3. Mazel Tov! I am delighted to see how many decent, likeable, gay conservatives are appearing in public these days. For a long time, I felt like I was the only one. I will be checking in on you regularly; it would be a good thing if you added RSS to your blog.

  4. Thank you all! And, thank you, Mr. Blatt, for linking to my blog on GayPatriot. It certainly motivates me to know that their might actually be people reading my blog. I hope I don't disappoint anyone. I am not an experienced blogger, and I will probably not have as much time when I start university in September.

  7. While I came out about 16 years ago, I didn't start looking for gay conservatives until about 6 years ago. I became aware of Log Cabin Republicans, but I lived further than I was willing to drive to attend their meetings.

One night, I got tired of reading the gay left drivel and e-mailed the LCR Tampa Bay club about alternatives. They suggested looking for blogs. I found Boi From Troy (no longer blogging) and a link to GayPatriot. I've thoroughly enjoyed GP for years and it's always been a daily stop.

I tried blogging for a few years. One day, I got bored and stopped. I was spending long hours reading news articles and other blogs and decided to go watch TV, which I hadn't done in ages. Now and then, I think of blog ideas or posts, but I just don't have the will to do it.

Keep up your good work and make the decisions that are right for you.

    Cheers,

    TGC
